FEMA IS-235.C & 242.C Executive Summaries
As I am minoring in emergency management, I was assigned to summarize seven independent studies by FEMA. In the course IS-235.c, it designs for those involved in crisis and emergency management thinking, or emergency manager’s personnel’s who are involved in developing an effective emergency planning system. It also offers training in the fundamentals of the emergency planning process, including the rationale behind planning. It will develop your capability for effective participation in the all-hazard emergency operations planning process to save lives and protect property threatened by disasters. Furthermore, the course provided learning objectives such as identifying doctrine and guidance for emergency planning, indicating the relationship between preparedness and planning. Identify the purpose and components of an emergency operations plan, identify the steps in the planning process, and finally determining the status of a jurisdiction’s emergency planning. In the course IS-242.C, it helps further improve communication skills as it is an essential everyday task for emergency managers. We learned how to communicate in an emergency, how to identify community-specific communications issues, using technology as a communication tool, effective oral communications, and how to prepare for a public oral presentation. The objectives of the course were to identify factors that contribute to and detract from effective communication such as knowing your audience, what the urgency of the message is, what the reliability of the medium if from, the appropriateness of the medium is, and what are the resources. Develop a plan for ensuring that emergency communications meet the needs of the whole community, including those with admission and useful needs. Identify strategies for communication effectively in emergency situations. Finally, identify strategies and tools for improving your oral presentations skills such as using social media, internet, radio, or even the television. What I can use from this course to benefit myself as an emergency manager is to overcome my nervousness of public speaking as I tend to do. Also, further improve my terminology and how to effectively use my critical thinking to communicate with others.
